Job Description

Power Industry Support, LLC is actively recruiting a Central Utility Plant Manager for the Rady Childrens Hospital located in San Diego, CA. The facility has a 5MW Gas Turbine with a Heat Recovery Boiler, Auxiliary Steam Boilers, Electric and Absorption Chillers, Automation Controls, and all associated balance of plant equipment.

The Cogeneration Facility generates electricity utilizing (1) Solar Taurus 60 Gas Turbine Generator, High Temperature Water via (1) Rentech Heat Recovery Boiler (HRB) and (2) Back-up Unilux Package Boilers, Chilled Water via (2) Trane Absorption Chillers and (3) Carrier Centrifugal Chillers and associated Balance of Plant (BOP) Equipment. All system operations are controlled with an automated PLC control system based on Rockwell Automation hardware and software.

We are looking for an experienced Facilities Manager who is responsible for the preventative, corrective and overall maintenance of all facility systems and associated plant equipment and to assure the plant is operated in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner.

Salary Range: $136,700 – $164,000

Job Summary

This position is responsible for overseeing, managing, and directing the day-to-day operation and maintenance activities of a mid-sized plant facility. This position will be responsible for performing difficult and complex services requiring a high level of independent judgment, initiative, and discretion. Work is mainly self-directed, with work results reviewed through the achievement of set goals and adherence to policies and procedures.

A high degree of communication and collaboration with others is required. Proactive leadership (by example) to reinforce the company’s core values of Safe, Caring, Dependable, and Efficient to continuously improve and develop employee culture is critical for the success of this position.

He or she manages the daily operation of the facility to ensure the environment and plant personnel are safe. He or she will be knowledgeable of all environmental and compliance permits and how they are implemented in an operating plant.

Results are reviewed through the achievement of set goals and adherence to these policies, procedures, and practices.

Key Accountabilities

  • Directs day-to-day operation and maintenance activities
  • Primary liaison with the customer on matters pertaining to daily operations including the scheduling of production levels
  • Ensures the facility is operated in a safe and environmentally responsible manner in compliance with the core values of hiring company and all local, state, and federal regulations
  • Develops the annual O&M budget
  • Controls expenditures to ensure costs remain within budget
  • Schedules and coordinates major maintenance and contractor activity to coincide with the production requirements of the customer
  • Prepares periodic status reports that describe operating performance, issues and forecasts of future performance
  • Implements a planned maintenance program consisting of predictive, preventative and corrective maintenance activities documenting such activities through the use of work orders and similar processes
  • Conducts or arranges for periodic training for all plant personnel covering technical, safety, environmental and supervisory topics as appropriate
  • Ensures that all employees and contractors abide by established policies and procedures pertaining to plant safety and environmental stewardship
  • Works with Director of Operations and operations support personnel to share and implement best practices throughout the organization

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through at least 8 years supervisory or managerial experience in a cogeneration power plant, or
  • Associate degree or industry-recognized certificate (i.e., the completion of a core group of course designated by the institution) in a related discipline is preferred and knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through at least 6 years supervisory or managerial experience in a cogeneration power plant, or 4 years of military experience at an officer level, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 4 year supervisory or managerial experience in a cogeneration power plant

Other Qualifications

Other Requirements:

  • Thorough, demonstrated understanding of plant operations and maintenance, with strong knowledge of generating equipment
  • Knowledge of power plant safety policies and procedures, especially in the areas of high energy systems, chemical handling, heavy equipment, rotating machinery, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, and first aid
  • Ability to analyze and improve operations business processes, utilizing information about market dynamics and competitors’ processes and achievements
  • Proven planning and scheduling experience working with technical personnel involved with preventative/predictive maintenance and corrective maintenance
  • Solid knowledge of plant engineering and plant maintenance functions and how they relate to operations and income
  • Experience with accounting practices as it relates to analyzing cost impacts to budget
  • Demonstrated skill in planning, coordinating, and directing varied programs and tasks directly effecting the overall plant operation
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding skill in leadership and interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to work shifts and extra/irregular hours and to work under unusual and special conditions that can arise in a power plant

  • Frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel or sit

  • Frequently lift objects of up to 25 pounds in weight
  • Occasionally the employee will have to lift or move objects of up to 40 pounds in weight
  • Occasionally push or pull up to 70 pounds in weight
  • Vision requirements for this position include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both in a business office setting and out in plant. In the course of working at the plant site, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, and may work near moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in the office but may become loud at the plant site.
